Biotechnology is one of the core technologies that will accelerate the Malaysia’s transformation into a highly industrialized nation by 2020. The Government has encouraged the development of Biotechnology through financial support on its R&D.

Biotechnology means any techniques or process which involved the application of science associated with living things e.g. microorganisms, animals or plants in solving problem or producing products which are beneficial to human kind. Biotechnology combines disciplines like genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry and cell biology, which are in turn linked to practical disciplines such as marine environmental, food and others. Therefore, the graduates from Bachelor of Biotechnology degree have capability to understand and exploit the roles of cellular organizations and use these in order to improve production or their function. Applications of biotechnology range from a simple screening of the useful compound to the production of tissues, drugs, synthetic hormones and enzymes. The uses of genetically-altered bacteria (or higher organisms) in the bioconversion of organic waste, biofuels, treatment of oil spills or as bulk foodstuffs have been the main concerns of modern biotechnology.

Department of Biotechnology at IIUM offers Bachelor of Biotechnology (Honors) with concentration packages leading to various fields. The course contents on the degree program were outlined in the departmental link and any further information can be obtained by contacting the current Head of Department, Dr. Noor Faizul Hadry Bin Nordin.
